To the Sons of Italy,
Why would you choose someone like Columbus to represent your contributions to America? A man who, as religious as he was, gave the orders that led to the consequential murder, rape, and genocide of the native people, who welcomed him with open arms. What does that say about you? You let a man who never set foot in the main land and killed millions represent your people? That doesn’t make any sense.
I’m sure you’ll find that the people who are opposed to Columbus Day are not saying that you shouldn’t celebrate your heritage, but rather, find someone who is both better suited for having his own holiday and didn’t commit atrocities against the people who you share this nation with. Columbus himself does not deserve a holiday celebrating his greatness, because he sits among some of the worst people of his time. Sharing a category with men like Hernan Cortes who Conquered the Aztecs and Francisco Pizarro who crushed the Incan Empire.
In short, Columbus’ true past is not one worth celebrating for many people in America and contesting that there are no other famous Italian contributors to America would be a lie that further hurts your case. There is a great many people who could easily step up to the plate and take Columbus’ place. Lorenzo “Yogi” Berra, Georgia O’Keeffe, Robert Gallo M.D., and John Cabot are just a few candidates who could replace Columbus.
The Native Americans feel something akin to a celebration of Hitler when Columbus day rolls around. A man who was indirectly responsible for the death of millions is not a man to hold in high regards no matter what he may have accomplished. So I implore you, find someone who you can be proud of and who will not offend the people of this nation that we share.
